Preparing for Snow: How West Jordan Is Helping You Keep Streets Clear and Safe This Season
Snow means cuddling up in warm blankets with a cup of cocoa, sledding, and holidays. It also means dangerous roads and slippery sidewalks. Here are two things you can do to keep yourself and your neighbors safe through the winter.
- Clear the snow around your property
Shovel or plow snow away from sidewalks, fire hydrants and mailboxes.
What happens if you don’t? People can slip and get minor to serious injuries on icy sidewalks. Or, you might have to wait a few minutes while firefighters dig through the snow before finding the hydrant. Or, you might not get your mail.
Pro tip: If you shovel snow into the road, it makes more work for plows and can create dangerous blocks of ice for cars on the road. It’s safer to put snow back into your own yard.
- Avoid parking on the street during and after storms
What happens if you do? It’s not only against city ordinance, but if you leave your car parked on the street, plows can’t get through. They may need to skip your street entirely. Now imagine garbage day, a snow filled street lined with cars AND garbage cans – Impossible.
West Jordan is the home of the good neighbor – watch out for each other and encourage your neighbors to park in their driveway or garage when a storm is coming.
Pro tip: Avoid getting tickets when you park on the street during clear weather by not parking in front of fire hydrants, mailboxes or driveways.
What we’re doing to help
Coming to a windshield near you! We’re starting a new sticky-note program this year – If you see something on your dashboard, it’s probably not a ticket, just a friendly reminder! The mayor, council members and other staff will be placing these on cars while out and about before snow storms.
“We’re always looking to stay ahead of the curb when it comes to keeping our streets safe,” said Mayor Dirk Burton, “A little reminder on a car door can go a long way – because, after all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of plow power.”
