Our education courses are an excellent community resource. We provide these classes to support our mission to enhance public awareness and education through prevention programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
\n
Our CPR course trains citizens in CPR, AED, and First Aid use. It is developed from the American Heart Association Heartsaver\u00ae course and is a perfect introduction to this life-saving skill. The class provides an AHA certification card and is valid for 2 years. You will leave this class feeling confident in your abilities and ready to face any emergency that comes your way. We\u2019ve partnered with Jordan Valley Medical Center to bring you a babysitting preparation course that is sure to help your child gain the confidence they need. We will cover everything from CPR\/First Aid, how to engage and play with children of all ages, and how to keep yourself safe while babysitting. Jr. Firefighter Academy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Does your child dream of becoming a firefighter one day? Do they have their own turnout gear at home and practice hose drills in the backyard? Let them come experience the real thing! Our Jr. Firefighter Academy is a summer day camp where your child will get to experience what it is like to be a real firefighter. Your Jr. Firefighter will ride in a fire truck, spray the hose, climb ladders, and practice first aid alongside their heroes. West Jordan Fire Cadets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Has your teen been considering becoming a firefighter? Our Fire Cadets program is made for those young adults who are seriously interested in making this their career. This program is not for the faint of heart; we will show your teen what it really means to be a firefighter. They will have the opportunity to spray fire hoses, ride in an ambulance, climb ladders, rappel, and have a front-row seat to many other demonstrations. After becoming a West Jordan Fire Cadet, they will be prepared to enter school courses to begin their firefighting career. So, what are you waiting for? We love to support our community in any way we can, and we are happy to attend your health\/safety event! Please contact us to discuss your event and to schedule. Wondering if your event is the right fit for us? Use these guidelines to decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fire department cannot pay to have a booth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
We do have a very busy schedule and are not able to attend all events. Please schedule with us as soon as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Our focus is on fire and life safety and thus must be a central theme of the event. We will only discuss fire safety\/prevention and life safety topics. It is not appropriate for us to attend any kind of promotional event.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

CERT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, was developed by FEMA to help people across the nation develop the knowledge and skills necessary to feel prepared for a natural disaster. If you want to feel more prepared to care for your family and community, but don\u2019t know where to start, this is the course for you. We will cover a variety of preparedness topics including home preparation, team organization, fire safety, search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. Come join us for CERT and get prepared!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West Jordan Fire Department is happy to serve the community by offering business safety training. We can assist with fire safety and extinguisher training, and First Aid\/CPR. Please contact us to discuss your needs and to schedule the training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fire Safety & Extinguisher Training<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
We will cover fire exit planning and procedures as well as appropriate time and use of a fire extinguisher. At this time, we ask that the requesting business supply enough extinguishers for their employees. The fire department will supply a real fire to train with as well as personnel to maintain safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First Aid & CPR Training<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
We can cover any health safety topics applicable to the work environment. We can organize the training to cover either CPR or First Aid or both. At this time, we will only teach Push-to-Survive CPR training for businesses. This means employees will not learn about child\/infant resuscitation or rescue breathing for adults. This training does not qualify employees to receive a CPR certification card from the American Heart Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire & Life Safety School Presentations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\n
\n
The West Jordan Fire Department recognizes that prevention education starts when we are young. That is why so many of our programs focus on the youth; and at the core is our fire and life safety school presentations. We have set a different focus for each grade level to help build upon safety knowledge and skills. Every lesson we create centralizes on state Core Curriculum standards in order to enhance their current learning environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are a teacher in West Jordan, contact us to schedule a lesson for your class! If you are a parent, contact us about our visits with your child\u2019s school!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Preschool<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Preschoolers learn about smoke alarms and how to exit a home safely with the help of our friend the dragon. We read a fire safety book about the dragon and talk about things he does right and wrong while he is escaping his home that is on fire. The students then take turns practicing fire drill procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kindergarten<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Kindergarteners learn about dangerous items in and outside of the home. We learn how to identify the danger and talk through what we should do about it. The primary focus is how to prevent it from happening again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1st Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
First graders learn about smoke alarms and the importance of having them in the home. We discuss what the different sounds of a smoke alarm mean and where students should have smoke alarms installed in their homes. Students also practice how to exit a home safely in the event of a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2nd Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Second graders learn about the history and evolution of firefighting and firefighters\u2019 role in our city. They will also talk about how they can help the firefighters by learning how to identify an emergency and call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3rd Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Third graders will learn about burns and scalds by identifying common hazards that cause them and how to mitigate those hazards. The students get to discuss friction, heat sources, and the role that they play in burns and scalds. The students will also practice some first aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4th Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Fourth graders become Jr. EMT\u2019s as they learn about common illnesses and injuries and how to treat them. Students will experience the use of science topics in first aid, such as severe weather patterns and venomous indigenous wildlife. They will also get to practice emergency medical treatments.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5th Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Fifth graders explore the natural disasters that can occur in different regions of the country while focusing on Utah. They will be given an opportunity to graph a fire escape plan for their families as well as decorate a bag they can use for their emergency preparedness materials. This program is courtesy of the American Red Cross Pillowcase Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6th Grade<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
Sixth graders will study the science of happiness. They will learn about common misconceptions about what they think makes them happy (money, things, media) and what really makes them happy. Students will also have an opportunity to learn and practice a myriad of coping strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
