Neighborhood Traffic Management Program
The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program for local residential streets represents the City of West Jordan’s commitment to the safety and livability of residential neighborhoods.
The program provides a process for identifying and addressing problems related to speeding, excessive traffic volume, and safety on streets classified as “local residential streets.” Under the program, the engineering department will work with residents within neighborhoods to evaluate the type and severity of traffic problems.
The City of West Jordan no longer installs speed bumps due to their impact on essential services and overall traffic safety. Here’s why:
- Emergency Response Delays – Speed bumps can slow down police, fire, and medical services.
- Snow Plowing Challenges – They interfere with snow removal operations, making roads less safe in winter.
- Ineffective at Reducing Speeding – Data shows that drivers slow down before a speed bump but accelerate immediately after, creating a false sense of security.
Instead, West Jordan uses a more effective approach to managing speed in residential areas, which includes:
- Collecting traffic data – Measuring speed and traffic volume to assess safety concerns.
- Coordinating with law enforcement – Partnering with the West Jordan Police Department for targeted enforcement.
If you’re concerned about speeding in your neighborhood, the first step is requesting a speed study.
