The Council strives to create a comfortable, respectful and professional decorum in every public meeting. On this page, you’ll find an overview of meeting types and attendance options (in-person or virtual!) along with general rules and guidelines to meeting participation.

Council Meeting Types & Agenda Items

Council meeting agendas are posted online here at least 24-hours in advance to meet Utah State Code §52-4-202. Via the same link, you can also find past meeting materials, recordings, and minutes!

The West Jordan City Council follows a modified version of Robert’s Rules of Order for meeting proceedings, and is governed by established City Council Policies and Procedures.

Typical meeting types (with respective agenda items) are explained below, all subject to West Jordan Public Meeting Rules:

City Council
  • City Council meetings are the formal gathering of the city’s elected officials to discuss and make decisions on local government matters. City Council meeting agendas typically include but are not limited to:
    • Special Recognition
      • City department, community member/organization presentation or recognition, etc.
    • Public Comment
    • Public Hearings
      • Items intended to gather community input on specific issues, proposals, or projects before city council decisions, typically required for zoning changes, budget approvals, land-use developments, and other significant actions.
      • The city must notify residents according to Utah noticing requirements, and residents can express their opinions and concerns during the designated Public Comment period.
    • Business Items
      • Items requiring Council action that do not require a public hearing, or have otherwise met public hearing requirements in a previous council meeting.
    • Reports to Council
      • Council, Mayor, Council Office & Admin Reports, community or volunteer organization reports, etc.
    • Consent Items
      • Items not requiring public discussion or which have previously been discussed and may be adopted by one single motion.
      • Council Members may request to pull an item for further discussion and consideration.
  • City Council meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, and are otherwise scheduled as needed with proper noticing.

Committee of the Whole
  • Commonly called a “work session”, Committee of the Whole (COTW) meetings are held for the benefit of Council members to discuss city issues, options and proposals in an informal setting, allowing for in-depth conversation, discussion, and comprehensive understanding.
  • Agenda items are largely “Discussion Topics” typically involving councilmembers, the mayor, and staff.
  • No official action can be taken by the Council in these meetings.
  • COTW meetings are open to the public, but there are no Public Comment periods.
  • COTW meetings are held on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th (month pending) Tuesdays of each month.

Fairway Estates Special Recreation District
  • The West Jordan City Council also acts as the Board of the Fairway Estates Special Service Recreation District (FES).
  • Scheduled as needed, respective agendas may include business items, public hearing items, consent items, and others, as applicable.

Municipal Building Authority
  • The West Jordan City Council also acts as the board of the Municipal Building Authority (MBA).
  • The MBA is created according to Utah law and assists in development, redevelopment and financing of applicable city projects.
  • Scheduled as needed, respective agendas may include business items, public hearing items, consent items, and others, as applicable.

Redevelopment Agency
  • The West Jordan City Council also acts as the board of the Redevelopment Agency (RDA).
  • The RDA is created according to Utah law and assists in development, redevelopment and financing of applicable city projects.
  • Scheduled as needed, respective agendas may include business items, public hearing items, consent items, and others, as applicable.
